Some people are familiar with the photo. It has been surfacing the media for years now. To each person it means something different. The story in the photo is telling women that you do not see yourself the way others do. In this example a women with a eating disorder sees herself bigger. Women struggle with the need to be thin because of the models on the runway, the ballerina in the latest Swan Lake ballet or the women in the fitness magazine. Why is it that the most popular and influencing areas in the media want the idea of skinny people modeling for them? To me, it isn't far that young children are seeing these ads or beautiful models and then they look in the mirror and don't see that same look.
The struggle and pressure it is to be thin is something I hope to see in the near future as a change. The average women spends 31 years on a diet. Many women know about diets because almost everyone has been on one.
Society has a relentless obsession with weight and body image which needs to change. The worst part of people dealing with an eating disorder is that they are also struggling to stay alive. God did not make our bodies to live without food and proper nutrition. There was a story I once heard in one of my health classes in high school. My teachers neighbor was always into running. She would run several times a day after each meal. She was still not satisfied with her body. She continued to eat less and less until one day her family found her dead because her body could not take anymore. My question is what started this idea? Was in media? Why is it acceptable for people to treat their bodies like that? With research I have done in the health field over the years, it is known that people that suffer from eating disorders are serious and unfortunetly it is in their head that they need to look a certain size until they make themselves sick.
Just like the photo above, this is the real problem with eating disorders, the women do not see how skinny they are.
